Want to try something
new? Contrafusion comes to Kent!
Imagine a dance where you don’t need to go with a partner and you don’t
need to learn any footwork. All the men and women line up and the
caller gives simple instructions from the stage; then the music starts
and you get to dance with lots of different partners. You don’t even
need to think about what move to use next as the caller tells you what
to do during the dance. No, it’s not Modern Jive! It’s American Style Contra Dancing - with
influences from swing, modern jive, hip-hop, tango and dirty dancing.
It’s Contrafusion.
The only real answer to the question "What
is contra dance?" comes when you try it. The next best
thing is to see it being danced. Go to http://www.contrafusion.co.uk
and watch a few videos, then come back here and carry on reading…

“Turning, moving, spinning, dresses swirling, music beating, eyes in
contact with a partner, then another, then another, then another, and
the fiddle turns a corner, the phrase repeats, the dance repeats. You
smile. Your body smiles.” (Doug Plummer)
Inspired by the young dancers in Asheville, North Carolina, Karen and John Sweeney are starting Contrafusion, a new contra dance
club in Ashford in Kent. Weekly dances, starting in January, will
have an emphasis on teaching as well as dancing. If you have never done
this type of dancing before we will help you to get started so that you
can join in and have fun on your first night.
We will also be teaching you how to do all the styling and variations
that the Americans are now putting into their dancing, so, whether you
are an experienced dancer or an up-and-coming beginner, we hope to help
you enhance your dancing and add to your enjoyment of the
evening.
Keep up to date with what is happening by checking http://www.contrafusion.co.uk
or contact John at info@contrafusion.co.uk
or 01233 625 362. Come and join us to get some exercise, have
some fun and meet lots of people of all ages.
Weekly Monday
night dances start on Monday January 18th 2010 at 8pm in Hothfield
Village Hall, 5 minutes from J9 on the M20.
Please join the Facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=332620675502
so we can start building a community.
And please forward this to any of your friends who might like to give
it a go!
